Dholera Airport Nears Operational Readiness with Air Cargo Terminal on Track for Early 2026
The Dholera International Airport, a key infrastructure project shaping the future of Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR), is advancing steadily toward operational readiness, with major structural milestones already achieved and key facilities nearing completion.
Covering a sprawling area near Navagam and backed by significant investment and planning, the airport is designed to serve as a major aviation and logistics hub supporting both passenger travel and international air cargo operations. Once complete, it will significantly strengthen export and import logistics — a critical requirement for sectors such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and agritech.
One of the major achievements in the airport’s construction has been the completion of the 3,200-metre runway and taxiway, which have been structurally finalized and are ready for testing ahead of operational use.
Equally notable is the dedicated cargo terminal, which has reached an advanced stage of construction. According to updates, this terminal is expected to start handling international and domestic cargo traffic as early as late 2025 or early 2026, marking a crucial new chapter for cargo logistics in the region.
The cargo facilities are being developed with global trade and export requirements in mind. Authorities and stakeholders have been working to tender and set up ground handling services, terminal operations, and related support infrastructure to ensure that exporters, manufacturers, and logistics firms have immediate access to efficient freight services once the terminal is operational.
In addition to cargo, construction on the passenger terminal building and Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower is progressing rapidly. These facilities, along with aircraft parking bays and ancillary infrastructure, are being built on schedule to support a phased opening strategy.
The airport’s strategic location — linked by the nearly completed Ahmedabad–Dholera Expressway — will reduce travel time from Ahmedabad to under an hour, improving access for industries, travelers, and logistics players alike. Once fully operational, the airport is expected to serve as a multimodal logistics node, integrating aviation, road, and future freight corridors in the region.
Officials believe that the operationalization of cargo services will further catalyse Dholera’s role as a global export hub, enabling faster movement of high-value goods and strengthening supply chain networks for export-oriented industries. With continued progress on construction and regulatory clearances, initial cargo operations are expected to begin in early 2026, followed by broader passenger services as later phases are completed.
